« As a Yugoslav, mine clearance is an issue close to my heart. The conflicts of the 1990s in the Balkans left behind tonnes of unexploded ordnance, a huge proportion of which were anti-personnel mines. Even today, they continue to claim victims, hinder economic development and stand in the way of reconciliation.
In this context, any initiative committed to making these areas safe is of particular importance to those who are still living with the aftermath of these wars. The Digger Foundation is close to my heart because it addresses a historical, safety, economic and moral need that is deeply rooted in the reality of my home region.
Frédéric Guerne and I worked in the same laboratory at EPFL, and his humanity, perseverance and sense of humour have left a lasting impression on me. The creation of Digger is a technological, human and diplomatic adventure. I have the deepest admiration for Frédo, Béatrice and their team. Today, I am honoured to take on the role of ambassador for the Foundation. I do so with a sense of humility and commitment to a cause that is fundamental to the world in which we live.»
