Thomas RieblViolist
Thomas Riebl, born in Vienna in 1956, is one of the most renowned violists of his generation. Following honours at the International ARD Competition in Munich (1976) and the prestigious International Naumburg Competition in New York (1982), he has performed as a soloist and chamber musician on the most prestigious international concert stages, including the Golden Hall of the Vienna Musikverein and Carnegie Hall in New York.
As a professor emeritus at the Mozarteum in Salzburg, where he taught for 41 years, it gave him great pleasure to be able to guide generations of budding artists and teachers through the most important phase of their lives, shaping them both professionally and personally.
Always driven by a spirit of innovation, he worked with master violin maker Bernd Hiller to develop a five-string tenor viola, which broadens the repertoire. He has also published numerous arrangements for the viola.
“It is with great pleasure that I support the Digger Foundation. The ingenious concept of carrying out mine clearance using remote-controlled machines – thereby both saving lives and enabling work to be carried out much more efficiently – is truly impressive.”
